How to design like an architect
Architects make ideas real and create objects in which we dwell. The Romanian sculptor “Brancusi” called architecture, habitable sculpture. In this way, he presented architecture as an art and hence should be approached as such. If you’re to design like an architect therefore, you need to approach architecture as an art, but not forgetting it’s a science as well.
The artistic side of architecture.
The artistic side of architecture is in the design presentation, the aesthetics of the building both in and out, the vision of what the building is meant to represent, and the character it’s supposed to emanate. In other words, the artistic side of architecture is what gives buildings the definition and form that they hold, it’s what makes them unique from everything else.
The scientific side of architecture.
The scientific side of architecture is about the optimal utilization of the elements involved in the setup of the building. These are things such as space and its dimensions, lighting both natural and artificial, air flow both in and out of the building, sound both acoustic and noise, and everything else involved in the materials to be used in the building setup.
Solving the problems.
It is said that it's in the doing, that the idea comes and thus, every architect problem solves by doing, that is; writing, sketching, drawing, model making, and collaborating. Projects start with a client and a program. In the first phase the architect normally asks four fundamental questions; who, what, where, and why. The answers to the first three questions (who, what, where), inspire the architect and help to answer the last (why).
The architects’ inspiration filter serves the artistic side of architecture.
Architects when inspired and have ideas, those ideas are run through a filter unique to every architect, it’s the reason architects design the way they do. In the end, the building is a product of the architects inspiration filter, and that's why the buildings look the way they do; unique. They are products of inspiration filters unique to the different architects out there, and the answers to the questions in the filter also differ from case to case.
Materials science and surrounding elements e.g. marble floor, natural lighting, etc. Serve the scientific side of architecture.
It should to be noted however that, the inspiration filter serves its purpose to the artistic side of architecture. The scientific side of architecture is served by the understanding of the materials science and the dynamics of the surrounding elements. By materials science, we are talking about the properties of the materials used in bringing about the architectural component of the building. For example, understanding the material characteristics of marble, will help an architect know exactly when, where, why, and how to apply marble in his architectural design both for the short term and long term results.
The dynamics of the surrounding elements.
On the other hand of the dynamics of the surrounding elements, we are talking about the natural components of the surroundings and how to utilize them in the architectural design. These are things like; the direction of the sunrise and sun set relative to the building structure, the directions of wind flow at the various times of the day, environmental temperatures of the surrounding which could determine whether to create a closed structure or one that is more open to the outside elements, etc.
Look at architecture from both the artistic and scientific point of views in order to design like an architect.
Overall, if you’re to design like an architect for your home or getaway structure away from home, you should consider looking at architecture primarily from the artistic and scientific point of view. List what you would like your design to include, consider the science that list involves, and then draw your design basing on that list and the science. If you follow this procedure, you are well and truly guaranteed of coming up with a grand design for your architectural project.
