Why are houses in Norway and Sweden painted red?

The typical red of Scandinavian Houses (actually it is three different shades or red and there is a black and a grey too) is an iron oxide paint used to preserve the wood and stop rot and insects.

Used since ages ago as well as on new buildings, very common and considered a part of our national identity.
