Fashion is any particular mode by which clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, hairdos etc. are worn or utilized for purposes of presentation. Fashion therefore is a style; a distinctive and often constant trend by which people present themselves.

Fashion trends are often influenced by several factors including; cinema, celebrities, climate, creative explorations, political, economic, social and technological. Examining these factors is called a PEST (political, economic, socio-cultural and technological) analysis. Fashion forecasters can use this information to help determine growth or decline of a particular trend.

Fashion trends have long been catered for by the fashion industry right from design to manufacture. The fashion industry consists of four levels:

  1. The production of raw materials, principally fibers and textiles but also leather and fur.
  2. The production of fashion goods by designers, manufacturers, contractors, and others.
  3. Retail sales
  4. Various forms of advertising and promotion

These levels consist of many separate but interdependent sectors. These sectors are Textile Design and Production, Fashion Design and Manufacturing, Fashion Retailing, Marketing and Merchandising, Fashion Shows, and Media and Marketing. Each sector is devoted to the goal of satisfying consumer demand for apparel under conditions that enable participants in the industry to operate at a profit.

The four major current fashion capitals are acknowledged to be Paris, Milan, New York City, and London, which are all headquarters to the greatest fashion companies and are renowned for their major influence on global fashion. Fashion weeks are held in these cities, where designers exhibit their new clothing collections to audiences.

In recent years, Asian fashion has become increasingly significant in local and global markets.

Androgyny fashion combines the masculine and feminine characteristics and places them in one entity. It is usually used by people who don’t subscribe to any specific gender.


Anti-fashion is an umbrella term for various styles of dress which are explicitly contrary to the fashion of the day. Anti-fashion styles may represent an attitude of indifference or may arise from political or practical goals which make fashion a secondary priority. The term is sometimes even used for styles championed by high-profile designers, when they encourage or create trends that do not follow the mainstream fashion of the time. This anti-fashion was adopted in response to the 'overly fashion conscious' fans of bands such as the Sex Pistols.



Bogan is Australian and New Zealand slang for a person whose speech, clothing, attitude and behavior are considered unrefined or unsophisticated.

Boho-chic is a style of fashion drawing on various bohemian and hippie influences, which, at its height in late 2005 was associated particularly with actress Sienna Miller and model Kate Moss in the United Kingdom and (as "boho" chic) actress and businesswoman Mary-Kate Olsen in the United States. It has been seen since the early 1990s and, although appearing to wane from time to time, has repeatedly re-surfaced in varying guises. Many elements of boho-chic became popular in the late 1960s and some date back much further, being associated, for example, with pre-Raphaelite women of the mid-to-late 19th century.

Bon chic, bon genre (French for "Good style, good class") is an expression used in France to refer to a subculture of stylish members of the Paris upper class. They are typically well-educated, well-connected, and descended from "old money" families, preferably with some aristocratic ancestry. The style combines certain fashionable tastes with the appearance of social respectability. The expression is sometimes shortened to "BCBG" (the fashion company BCBG Max Azria was named in reference to the subculture).

The style of BCBG tends towards the conservative and classic, to "de-emphasize 'sexiness' and 'flashy' signs of wealth", and is influenced by "Anglo-Saxon" styles. Some brands trendy with the BCBG group include Gucci, Max Mara, Le Bon Marché, and Chanel.

Casual attire or casual wear, clothing is a Western dress code category that comprises anything not appropriate with formal attire, semi-formal attire, or informal attire dress codes. In general, casual attire is associated with emphasizing personal comfort and individuality over formality or conformity. As such, this type of dress may also be referred to as leisurewear. The word "casual" can in a broader sense be defined as something relaxed, occasional, spontaneous, or "informal" in the sense of "not formal" or "suited for everyday use" (although notably informal attire actually refers to a dress code more formal than casual attire, a step below semi-formal attire). Yet, when indicated as a dress code for instance on an invitation, casual attire may still be expected to be done tastefully, meaning that trousers and shirts do not have holes, tears, or stains.

Clubwear is provocative, revealing, or fetish clothing that is worn to nightclubs featuring a sensual atmosphere with a very relaxed dress code. There are various types of clothing items that could be worn to clubs based on the location of the club, the club's dress code and the weather.

Clubwear in the US and UK usually consists of things like tutus, white gloves, boiler suits, rompers, bikini sets, high visibility vests and trousers and fluffy or furry leg warmers. This type of clubwear is usually found at raves, big dance events and nightclubs dedicated to rave/dance music.

Cycle chic or bicycle chic refers to cycling in fashionable everyday clothes. The fashion concept developed in popular culture to include bicycles and bicycle accessories as well as clothing. The phrase Cycle Chic was coined in 2007 by Mikael Colville-Andersen, who started the Copenhagen Cycle Chic blog in the same year.

Dress clothes are clothing that is considered less formal than formal wear - traditionally known as informal - but more formal than casual wear. The term is considered a secular version of "Sunday clothes" or "church clothes", which signifies clothes worn by some Christians to church services.


Empire silhouette:

Empire silhouette, Empire line, Empire waist or just Empire is a style in clothing in which the dress has a fitted bodice ending just below the bust, giving a high-waist appearance, and a gathered skirt which is long and loosely fitting but skims the body rather than being supported by voluminous petticoats. The outline is especially flattering to pear shapes wishing to disguise the stomach area or emphasize the bust. The shape of the dress also helps to lengthen the body's appearance.

Gothic fashion is a clothing style marked by conspicuously dark, mysterious, antiquated and homogeneous features. It is worn by members of the Goth subculture. A dark, sometimes morbid fashion and style of dress, typical gothic fashion includes a pale complexion with colored black hair, black lips and black clothes. Both male and female goths can wear dark eyeliner and dark fingernail polish most especially black. Styles are often borrowed from the punk fashion, Victorians and Elizabethans. Goth fashion is sometimes confused with heavy metal fashion and emo fashion.

Grunge fashion:

Grunge fashion is the clothing, accessories and hairstyles of the grunge music genre and subculture which emerged in mid-1980s Seattle, and had reached wide popularity by the early 1990s. Grunge fashion is characterized by durable and timeless thrift-store clothing, often worn in a loose, androgynous manner to de-emphasize the silhouette. The style was popularized by music artists Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, and Pearl Jam.

Heroin chic:

Heroin chic was a look popularized in mid-1990s fashion and characterized by pale skin, dark circles underneath the eyes, very skinny body, dark red lipstick and angular bone structure. The look, characterized by emaciated features and androgyny, was a reaction against the "healthy" and vibrant look of models such as Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer. A 1996 article in the Los Angeles Times stated that the fashion industry had "a nihilistic vision of beauty" that was reflective of drug addiction.

Ivy League is a style of men's dress, popular during the late 1950s in the Northeastern United States, and said to have originated on college campuses, particularly those of the Ivy League. It was the predecessor to the preppy style of dress.


Lolita fashion:

Lolita is a fashion subculture from Japan that is highly influenced by Victorian and Edwardian children's clothing and styles from the Rococo period. A very distinctive property of Lolita fashion is the aesthetic of cuteness. This clothing subculture can be categorized into three main substyles: 'gothic', 'classic', and 'sweet'. Many other substyles such as 'Sailor', 'Country', 'Hime' (princess), 'Ero', 'Guro', 'Oriental', 'Punk', 'Shiro (white)', Kuro (black) and Steampunk Lolita also exist . This style evolved into a widely followed subculture in Japan and other countries in the 1990s and 2000s and may have waned in Japan as of the 2010s as the fashion became more mainstream.

Luxe Grunge (also known as boho-chic or "luxe bohemian") is a chicer updated grunge-boho collection; an unkempt approach to wardrobe, popularized by celebrities such as the Olsen twins.

Madras is a lightweight cotton fabric with typically patterned texture and plaid design, used primarily for summer clothing such as pants, shorts, dresses, and jackets. The fabric takes its name from the former name of the city of Chennai in India.



Seapunk is a subculture that originated on Tumblr in 2011. It is often associated with an aquatic-themed style of fashion, 3D net art, iconography, and allusions to popular culture of the 1990s. The advent of seapunk also spawned its own electronic music microgenre, featuring elements of Southern hip hop and pop music and RB music of the 1990s. Seapunk gained limited popularity as it spread through the Internet, although it was said to have developed a Chicago club scene.

Size zero or size 0 is a women's clothing size in the US catalog sizes system. Size 0 and 00 were invented due to the changing of clothing sizes over time (referred to as vanity sizing or size inflation), which has caused the adoption of lower numbers. For example, a 2011 size 0 is equivalent to a 2001 size 2, and is larger than a 1970 size 6 or 1958 size 8. Modern size 0 clothing, depending on brand and style, fits measurements of chest-stomach-hips from 30-22-32 inches (76-56-81 cm) to 33-25-35 inches (84-64-89 cm). Size 00 can be anywhere from 0.5 to 2 inches (1 to 5 cm) smaller than size 0. Size zero often refers to extremely thin individuals (especially women and adolescent girls), or trends associated with them.

Soft grunge is a fashion trend that originated in 2010 as a form of 1990s appropriation. Soft grunge is a bowdlerization of early 1990s grunge culture, involving grunge fashions such as flannel and grunge from contemporary subculture and gothic ("goth") subculture.


Thrift store chic:

Thrift store chic refers to a style of dressing where clothes are cheap and/or used. Clothes are often bought from thrift stores such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or Value Village. Originally popular among the hippies of the late 1960s, this fashion movement resurfaced during the mid-1980s among teenagers, and expanded into the 1990s with the growing popularity of such music and style influences including the grunge band Nirvana. Thrift store chic can be considered as an anti-fashion statement because it does not follow fashion trends and does not attempt to look expensive or new.
