College Students

There's a myth that college is supposed to be the best time of your life. You've dreamed about this for years. Studied hard, visited all the colleges and finally made your ‘perfect' choice. You were excited and scared. Looking forward to a magical four years.

The truth is, although college can be an amazing time in your life-it is hard! University of Illinois is a huge school with top academics. It’s easy to feel lost in the crowd or to find yourself overwhelmed with the pressure to achieve. The stress of making new friends is real. It can be hard to learn how to adult. Finding yourself having to learn new study skills or even to learn to study for the first time ever is exhausting.

I can help. I work with a lot of college students and understand the challenges faced by young adults that are trying to find their way. Here are some of the common challenges I help college students navigate.

Trauma Therapy: Whether you have survived a sexual assault, or an abusive relationship, I am here to help. If you have a history of bullying in high school or other past stressful experiences, we can work through it together. I am an experienced trauma therapist who can meet you where you are and help you to heal and move beyond your trauma. EMDR is especially well suited for this.

Anxiety Counseling: I work with clients who struggle with general anxiety, social anxiety, testing anxiety and performance anxiety. You don’t have to do this alone! Reach out and we can talk about ways for you to manage your anxiety and be successful in school.

Depression: Depression is so common for college students. Huge life changes take a toll on your mental health. You don’t have to stay stuck. You can get help and learn to feel good and enjoy your life again.

Life Transitions: Life transitions are a major part of college and it can be difficult. Being away from home for the first time, finding internships, joining clubs, learning to navigate a brand new world. Not to mention deciding what to major in and what your next steps are after graduation. I can help you navigate your new world.

Stress Management: College is stressful! Finding a new friend group, trying to balance school and internships, jobs and clubs. It can be a lot. I can help you learn new coping skills to help you mange the stressors of college so you aren’t overwhelmed.

Confidential, Simple, Secure, Safe Telehealth Services

Now more than ever is the time to find support and connect with a therapist.

It's okay that you are overwhelmed.

It's okay that you are anxious.

It's okay that you are struggling with our collective 'new normal.'

These are difficult times. No-one has a blueprint on what is happening or what comes next. Your feelings are valid. Your struggle is understandable.

The important thing is to not be overwhelmed by this experience. I have offered telehealth counseling for several years. Although it is not my preferred method of therapy, it is effective. I am licensed in the state of Illinois meaning I can work with you even if you are not in the Champaign/Urbana area.

Although the standards for telehealth therapy have been relaxed (therapists are not required to use secure platforms at this time.) I have not relaxed my standards. All telehealth therapy is conducted on a secure, hippa compliant platform.

You can connect over a laptop or desktop with no special software. Just follow the link to start the session!

You can also connect on your phone. (There's an app for that.) Download the app and follow the link. It's really that simple.

Video not for you? I can work with that. We can also conduct therapy over the phone. During this incredibly difficult time, I try to be as flexible as I can so that I can best support my clients.

My Approach to Counseling

We all need extra support from time to time. I work with college students and adults. I believe we are equal partners in the therapy process. My education and experience can help guide you on your healing journey, but you are the ultimate authority on your life and your goals.

I’ve been told by my clients that I am authentic and direct during sessions. My clients appreciate that I am compassionate and non-judgemental. They feel safe with me and know that I can hold space for them and all of their emotions, thoughts and beliefs.

Although the therapeutic relationship is the most important part of therapy. I use cognitive behavioral therapy to help shift negative thinking patterns. EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is invaluable. (You can read more about EMDR here).

About Me

It’s important to ‘click’ with your therapist, so it might be useful to know a little about me. I’m originally from Chicago, but joined the army after high school. People that didn’t know me back then find this almost impossible to believe, but I was military police. Being in the army was one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have ever done.

I bounced around for a bit after my honorable discharge. Eventually I ended up in Rantoul, IL working at the Lincoln’s Challenge Academy. I always describe myself as a cross between a drill sergeant and a mom during that time. Working with at-risk-youth was incredibly rewarding. My time at the Challenge was what finally set me on my path to becoming a therapist.

During this time, I had my own path to find. While in the army, I got really good at drinking. Before I was able to help others, I had to learn to help myself. I have found my own journey in recovery to be immensely helpful for my clients.

I received my Masters of Social Work from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I worked in a wide variety of community mental health settings before settling into private practice. This includes my internship at the Pavilion, my time as a youth crisis worker and working with all ages in community mental health agencies. I appreciate having the opportunity to work with such diverse populations. This has allowed me to really understand what areas of counseling I excel in.

I am an active student of Zen Buddhism. Daily mediation time along with sustained periods of mediation at our local Zen Center in Champaign, IL has a deep impact on my work with clients. I am able to be fully present while in session. Buddhism is the foundation for many coping skills, from mindfulness to being present in the body to deep breathing exercises. Zazen (Zen meditation) is the ultimate grounding exercise.

Recently, I attended the 40 hour training for EMDR. This has had a profound impact on my work with clients. I was so impressed with the power of EMDR that I have continued my education by pursuing my certification in EMDR. This is a long, intense process which moves clinicians from being competent in EMDR to expert. EMDR is useful in so many aspects of therapy. It can increase resiliency, decrease anxiety and of course, it can reprocess and put to rest once and for all past traumatic memories.
