Our Clinical Staff
John Jochem, Psy.D., president and founder of Hawthorn Counseling Group, has practiced as a licensed clinical psychologist in Illinois since 1989, primarily in the Northern Lake County area. Dr. Jochem is a generalist practitioner, working with adults, adolescents, couples & families, with sub-speciality interests in posttraumatic & adjustment disorders, brief cognitive psychotherapy, adolescent development and grief/bereavement counseling.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Jochem has held numerous clinical and management positions with hospital-based psychiatry departments, accruing considerable administrative, supervisory and program design experience. Training and supervision are key areas of interest for Dr. Jochem—he and colleagues established an accredited psychology training programs in which dozens of clinical psychologists received intensive clinical training as part of their doctoral preparation. In addition to his private practice with Hawthorn Counseling Group, Dr. Jochem continues to serve as consultant and supervisor to local mental health professionals, schools and agencies. He also has a longstanding interest in community psychology, having established a number of outpatient programs and services while director of a comprehensive psychiatry department in Lake County and he was instrumental in developing community-based crisis intervention and post-traumatic counseling services throughout the area.
In his clinical work, Dr. Jochem's areas of special interest include:

Bonnie Jo Jochem, L.C.S.W. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Mrs. Jochem has been in social work practice since 1979 and has worked in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings, treating adults, adolescents and children. She has developed a particular expertise in working with children through her experience as a school social worker in elementary school settings. In this capacity, Mrs. Jochem has developed expertise in assisting children struggling with academic, social and family problems. Mrs. Jochem is a generalist practitioner, skilled in the provision of individual and family psychotherapy to address presenting problems which include the following:
• Mood disorders, including depression
• Anxiety disorders, including panic disorder and social anxiety
• Academic underachievement
• Anger management issues among children & adolescents
