It seems that every day I am asked the same question, "Alexis Kay? How did you come up with this name?" Well, that begins why we're here. My middle name is Alexis; named for Alexis Carrington Colby from Dynasty because my mother was inspired by the clothes she wore, as well as her tenacity. My mother is the other owner and contributes her middle name as the Kay of Alexis Kay.
You could say that we are a bridal family. We come from a long line of seamstresses and dress designers. My mother (first name Dawn) has been making wedding dresses since before I was born. Some of my earliest recollections are of her pinning the hems of gowns for brides and bridesmaids in the middle of our living room floor. All her nieces were married in gowns she had crafted by hand. She even made her own wedding gown which hangs in our store.
I have always been a plus sized girl, so when my senior prom came around I found it difficult to find a dress that flattered my body shape. So, my mother designed and created my prom dress. This is what led me to bring into the store not only plus sized prom and homecoming gowns, but also, plus sized bridal. No woman should feel horrible the day she tries on her first wedding gown because they are only made for size 8 women. We take pride in carrying sizes 8 to 28 in store.
A wedding dress shop was something we had always talked about doing, ever since I was a small child. It was my mother's dream. It was a dream that was started when my great aunt put the bug in my mother's ear. My aunt, though she may be gone, was the most integral part of us opening this store. She inspired us. She pushed us. Above all else she believed that my mother had a gift. So here we are. The first bridal salon in the DeKalb area in over two decades.
Our salon is not your typical bridal shop. We wanted to bring back the pampered feeling to bridal. Something that has been missing for the last few decades. As more chain bridal salons open all over the country, the image of a family gathered around a mirror, having a store to themselves, and drinking champagne as a women tries on gorgeous gowns is slowly fading away. Now it is more common to see a girl emerge from a small closet and stand in front of a mirror with three to four brides standing next to her trying on the same gowns. With only enough sitting room for one or two family members.
A wedding is a once in a lifetime moment. Finding the perfect dress should include an amazing experience in a one of a kind salon.
